Our products feature molybdenum disulfide formulated for specific applications.
Molybdenum disulfide is a solid lubricant. We use only American made moly,
which is processed from molybdenite ore mined in the State of Colorado.
Its excellent lubricating capabilities were recognized by pioneers in the
19th century who smeared the ore on the axles of covered wagons as they migrated
westward.
This unique solid lubricant was developed in the 1930's, but not until the
1950's did full scale use of moly begin.
Considerable scientific research has been done on moly and its lubricating
properties. Our formulas make use of that research, of bench tests on our
products and other products, of our years of experience with moly, and of anecdotal
reports on performance.
Molybdenum disulfide has a "lamella structure." An atom of moly (Mo) has an
atom of sulfur (S) on the top and bottom of it; hence the chemical symbol MoS2.
In application the moly aligns itself in platelets. The sulfur atoms have a loose
bond with each other, which accounts for the "slipperiness" of moly. The molybdenum
atom is an element that withstands extreme pressures, which accounts for the load
carrying capability.
Moly has an affinity for steel. (Moly also works well with many other kinds of metals.)
It fills in the microscopic pores and plates out over the surface creating a barrier
film of about 1.5 microns. In use, the molecules slough off at the surface of the film
and are instantly replaced by other molecules from the reservoir of moly in the lubricant.
The benefit is less metal to metal contact between the two sliding surfaces.
Less contact means a reduction in friction and wear. This protection is especially
valuable in the presence of heat, moisture and pressure. Both heat and moisture lower
the viscosity of oil (making it "thin"), which reduces the thickness of the film of oil
and makes it less able to keep the two opposing sliding surfaces separated.
